Technology at Knox County Adult High School - Day Program

Knox County Adult High School, a high school for adults, offers students an opportunity to earn a regular high school diploma in a self-paced, independent leaning environment. Technology is crucial to this effort.
When a student enrolls at Knox County Adult High School he or she is given a unique username and password that allows access to a personalized and unique folder on the file server. The teacher places work in this folder and the student - and only that student - can access the work from any school computer. Every student has access to a computer (all new computers with flat panel monitors were purchased in fall 2006) while at Knox County Adult High School. The classroom computers allow limited internet access. Using the Webzapper program, only sites pre-selected by the faculty are accessible. This keeps the independent learner focused on appropriate coursework. An internet lab is available to students where a more open access to the internet is provided. 
Teachers have wirelessly connected tablet laptops which allow the teachers to access student work on the network and “mark up” the assignments to provide feedback to the students paperlessly.
Knox County Adult High School also maintains a database program which allows complete record keeping and testing. Complete and accurate up-to-date information is available on demand to staff including: academic history, present academic achievement and grades, attendance, contact and emergency information. All 
students - including present students, drops, and graduates - that have ever attended Knox County Adult High School are included in the database. Students can return to school after extended absences and continue work immediately. Students are responsible to clock themselves in and out each day to keep accurate attendance records. Staff has instant access to updated information on all students.
Knox County Adult High School website, http://kcahs.knoxschools.org, offers information and services for current, past, and perspective students as well as other interested parties.The website is updated daily and includes information about upcoming events, a complete calendar, complete information about how the school operates, past and present accomplishments, the student handbook, a complete course catalog with syllabus for each course, and extensive other information. Students, using their username and password, can access their updated status and progress reports, messages from their teacher, and even download and upload assignments. Teachers, using their username and password, have access to testing and answer key information. Knox County Adult High School website offers an ever expanding plethora of information and services.
Internet connectivity, allows students to continue to make progress in school even if regular attendance is not possible. Knox County Adult High School technology also allows students to print out assignments and proceed using paper and pencils.
