Who can attend?

The Knox County Adult High School program is open to all residents of Knox County Tennessee who are eighteen or older. Students who are under eighteen may be admitted with the permission and recommendation of their base high school.

How are the graduation requirements determined?

Students are required to provide a high school transcript. The guidance counselor will review each transcript and develop an individualized graduation plan for each student. KCAHS accepts credits from any accredited high school. As a Tennessee high school KCAHS does not accept competency testing from other states. Students from other states (and private schools) must complete Tennessee Gateway requirements.

KCAHS Graduation Requirements

How long does it take to finish graduation?

The Knox County Adult High School program is individualized and self-paced. A student must complete all requirements to earn a diploma. Some students require only a credit or two while others may need many credits. Obviously the students needing fewer credits are more likely to finish quickly. However, students who come often, work at home, and are able to take advantage of special programs – like career connections – can move through coursework efficiently. Generally we would expect a student to be able to complete at least one credit per month.

How often must I attend?

The Knox County Adult High School tries to accommodate the various needs of our students. Some students have work or personal obligations that make regular attendance difficult. The students are expected to attend their designated session (morning or afternoon) each day; however, students are encouraged to talk to their teacher about alternative scheduling.

When can I start?

The Knox County Adult High School is an open entry open exit program. Students may enter at anytime during the school year. (Note: KCAHS follows the same calendar as all Knox County schools; therefore, it is closed during the summer.) Click “How To Enroll” for more information on the next interview and orientation dates.

When will I receive my diploma?

Graduation, like entry, occurs throughout the year. Whenever a student completes all the requirements for graduation the student’s transcript is updated and can be forwarded to a school or employer; however, actual diplomas are only awarded once a year at or after the May graduation.

Can I complete the Knox County Adult High School online?

No, KCAHS is not an online school. Students may download and upload coursework; however, all testing is done at the school. Other aspects of the program also require attendance at the school. KCAHS is intended to serve the people of Knox County and will accept students from surrounding counties if there is room.

What is the cost?

Presently KCAHS charges a $30 materials fee upon enrollment that is good for the school year. Continuing students must pay a $30 fee each school year. The diploma fee is about $20. Students participating in graduation must pay a robe rental fee.
